What These Numbers Mean

Aperture

203 mm (8 inch)

Eight inches of mirror gathers about 840 times more light than your eye. That is enough to split tight double stars, resolve the cores of globular clusters, and show cloud bands on Jupiter alongside the Cassini division in Saturn's rings.

Focal length

2032 mm

Two metres of focal length naturally favours planets, the Moon, double stars, globular clusters and small galaxies. Wide nebulae such as the North America Nebula need a focal reducer or a different telescope entirely.

Focal ratio

f/10

A slow f/10 delivers high-magnification, high-contrast views of the Moon and planets with forgiving eyepiece requirements. The cost is a narrow field and dimmer deep-sky views than a fast scope of the same aperture.

Optical design

Schmidt-Cassegrain

The folded light path packs 2032 mm of focal length into a tube about 43 cm long, which is the only reason an 8 inch telescope can sit on a single fork arm. The sealed tube stays clean and holds collimation, in exchange for a real cooling period.

Finding system

SkyAlign GoTo

Point the scope at any three bright objects and SkyAlign works out the whole sky, then slews automatically to more than 40,000 targets. You can find galaxies without knowing a single constellation.

Mount

Motorised single-fork alt-az

The motor tracks objects so they stay centred at high power, which is a real advantage over a manual Dobsonian. The single-arm fork on a tripod adds some vibration, and alt-azimuth tracking rules out long-exposure astrophotography.

Editor’s Take

The 8SE put GoTo in a lot of first-time hands and is still the default do-everything computerised scope. GoTo means the mount finds and tracks for you: align on two bright stars, pick a target, and its motors slew there and follow it. The 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain ("SCT") folds a long 2032 mm focal length into a compact tube on a single-arm alt-az fork, so you get serious aperture for high-resolution Moon, planets and real deep-sky detail, carried out in two pieces. As a point-and-explore visual scope, few first telescopes are as beloved.
