Before harmonic mounts existed, this is where deep-sky imaging started for most people, a German equatorial mount light enough to carry out to the car, steady enough to trust through a long exposure. The HEQ5 is the classic astrophotography on-ramp, and it still earns the spot.

A proven imaging platform that stays genuinely portable for its class. It sits a notch below the EQ6-R on raw capacity and the AM5N on portability, but it nails the middle.
Polaris weighs tracking and payload capability, how easy the mount is to live with, how portable it is, and how far it takes you before you outgrow it — not list price or brand.
The HEQ5 is a German equatorial mount, telescope on one arm, counterweight on the other, sized as the classic on-ramp to deep-sky astrophotography. The workflow it teaches is the one all imaging mounts share: level the tripod, polar align (aim the mount's axis at the pole near Polaris through the polar scope), let the SynScan GoTo slew to your target, then run long exposures while an autoguider, a small second camera watching a star, feeds tiny corrections back so the stars stay pinpoint. It's light enough to carry to the car and back, steady enough to trust through those exposures, and it has decades of tutorials behind it. Harmonic mounts have since made it possible to carry more for less weight, but very few people regret the nights they spent learning to guide on an HEQ5.
The scopes we’d actually put on this mount — chosen for payload, balance and intended use. Comfortable means room to spare; near the limit still works, with care.
Perfect, a featherweight refractor on the classic first imaging mount.
The HEQ5’s sweet spot for tracked deep-sky.
Comfortable, great for visual, fine for imaging at modest focal length.
Within capacity but near the practical imaging ceiling, the heavier EQ6-R is its better home.
Strong and stable; a long-standing benchmark with healthy resale.
