Five inches is the point where planetary detail becomes genuinely rewarding rather than merely visible. The theoretical resolution is about 0.9 arcseconds, better than typical seeing allows, which means on the nights the atmosphere cooperates you are seeing everything the telescope can deliver. Jupiter shows festoons and barges rather than just two belts.
Focal length
1500 mm
Long focal length is what this design trades field of view for, and for planets it is exactly the right trade. A 10 mm eyepiece gives 150x, and 18 mm gives 83x, so the whole useful planetary range is reachable with ordinary eyepieces. It also makes this a natural planetary imaging telescope, since a small fast camera wants exactly this much focal length.

Slow optics mean a dim and narrow field, which for planets is irrelevant and for nebulae is disqualifying. The upside rarely mentioned is that a slow beam is easy for an eyepiece to correct, so inexpensive eyepieces perform close to their best here, where the same glass would show edge aberrations in a fast Newtonian.
Focuser
Internal dual speed
This is the feature that separates this tube from the smaller Maksutovs. Focusing a Maksutov moves the primary mirror, and at 150x the range between sharp and soft is a fraction of a turn. A dual-speed mechanism gives a fine reduction that lets you settle on exact focus instead of hunting past it in both directions.
Optical design
Maksutov-Cassegrain
A thick meniscus corrector and two mirrors fold 1500 mm into a tube barely a foot long, sealed against dust and never needing collimation. The dielectric secondary coating at 99 percent reflectivity is a genuine improvement over the aluminium used in cheaper tubes, preserving contrast that matters most on low-contrast planetary detail.
Cooldown
30 to 40 minutes
A thicker corrector holds more heat than the smaller Maksutovs, and until it has equalised with the night air the currents inside the tube will smear exactly the fine detail you bought the aperture for. Set the telescope outside before dinner, not before observing. This is not optional and it is the most common reason a new owner is disappointed.
