What These Numbers Mean

Aperture

Six inches gathers about 460 times the light of your eye, which is large for a Maksutov. It resolves close double stars, shows fine detail on Jupiter and Mars, and brings the brighter globular clusters within reach.

Focal length

1800 mm

Long. It reaches 360x with a 5 mm eyepiece, which the aperture can genuinely support on steady nights. The narrow field means a 32 mm eyepiece still only gives 56x, so this is not a scope for sweeping the Milky Way.

Focal ratio

f/12

Slow by design, which is what delivers the high-contrast planetary images. It also means faint extended objects look dim and imaging deep sky is impractical without a reducer.

Optical design

Maksutov-Cassegrain

A sealed tube with a thick meniscus corrector, no collimation to maintain, and a small central obstruction that preserves contrast. It is the design planetary specialists choose when a refractor of the same aperture would be impractically long and costly.

Weight

About 15 lb in a short tube, so it lifts easily onto a mount. The compact shape means a mid-size alt-azimuth or equatorial handles it well.

Cooldown

60 to 90 minutes

A six-inch meniscus is a large mass of glass and it cools slowly. Until the tube reaches ambient temperature the planetary views stay soft, so plan setup an hour ahead or fit a cooling fan.
