What it's built forOpen these in the simulator →

This telescope was built to gather light.

150 mm of aperture pulls in the faint light that galaxies and clusters live or die on. Point it up under a dark sky and objects that are rumors in smaller scopes resolve into real structure.

The view people remember

The Whirlpool, and its companion.

A face-on spiral with a smaller galaxy caught at the end of one arm — on a dark night the spiral structure lifts off the sky in a way photographs almost prepare you for.

What These Numbers Mean

150mm · f/5 · 750mm FL · Dobsonian
Aperture
150 mm
Six inches of mirror gathers about 460 times the light of your eye, which covers the whole Messier catalogue from a decent site. That is remarkable aperture for a telescope that lives on a table and stores in a cupboard.
Focal length
750 mm
Short enough for wide, easy low-power views and long enough that a 5 mm eyepiece reaches 150x for planetary work. A well balanced range for a compact scope.
Focal ratio
f/5
Fast optics reach wide, low-power deep-sky views but demand reasonable eyepieces to keep edge stars tidy, and they show collimation errors readily. Budget for one good wide-field eyepiece.
Optical design
Collapsible tabletop Newtonian
The tube slides down for storage, keeping a six-inch telescope small enough to carry with one hand. The open truss section benefits from a shroud against stray light and dew.
Weight
~9 kg
Around 20 lb complete. One trip outside, no assembly, no power, which is the single biggest reason a telescope gets used regularly.
Mount
Tabletop Dobsonian base
Stable and intuitive, but it needs a table, wall or sturdy box to bring the eyepiece to a comfortable height. Tracking is manual, so objects drift and need nudging at high power.
