Filter typeEntry
UHC / light pollution
It blocks the sodium and mercury wavelengths street lighting emits while passing the main nebula lines. The effect is real but gentler than premium narrowband glass, which uses a tighter passband.
What changesSelective
Emission nebulae, modestly
Expect a visible lift on the Orion Nebula, the Lagoon and the Swan under suburban skies. Galaxies and clusters gain nothing, because they shine across the whole spectrum rather than at specific lines.
Barrel sizeStandard
1.25 inch
Fits the standard eyepiece size that almost every telescope ships with, so there is no adapter or 2 inch focuser required. That makes it the easiest nebula filter to start with.
Sky requirementContrast
Best under light pollution
The worse the artificial skyglow, the more this filter helps, because most of what it removes is exactly that. Under a dark rural sky the improvement is much smaller.
ValueBudget
Lowest-cost entry
Cheap enough to answer the question of whether nebula filters suit your sky and your telescope before committing to premium glass. Many observers keep it as a spare after upgrading.
