What These Numbers Mean

Aperture

Six inches of reference-grade refractor glass, which is about as large as apochromats get before cost becomes prohibitive. It gathers roughly 33 percent more light than a 130 mm and resolves detail limited by the atmosphere rather than by the optics.

Focal length

1100 mm

Long enough to reach 220x with a 5 mm eyepiece and to frame globular clusters, planetary nebulae and galaxies with real scale. With the dedicated flattener it produces some of the cleanest wide-field images available at this focal length.

Focal ratio

Moderate speed, chosen to support the design's extreme correction rather than to shorten exposures. Imaging with it is a patient discipline; the reward is star fields with essentially no aberration anywhere in frame.
