Five inches of the most highly corrected refractor optics available. On the planets and the Moon it delivers the kind of contrast that makes observers compare it favourably with much larger reflectors, and it has real light grasp for deep sky as well.

A metre of focal length reaches 200x with a 5 mm eyepiece and frames globular clusters, planetary nebulae and galaxies well. With the dedicated flattener it is also a superb imaging telescope at this scale.

Moderate speed that supports the extreme colour correction this design targets. Imaging exposures are longer than a fast astrograph needs, which is the accepted price for star images this clean.

Ortho-apochromatic triplet

A three-element design corrected for both colour and spherical aberration to a standard beyond ordinary apochromats. That is why bright stars show no halo at high power, and why this telescope costs what it does.

About 16 lb of dense, long tube. It is a one-person lift, but the length means a substantial mount and tripod are needed to keep views steady at 300x.

No mount included, and this tube deserves a serious one. An EQ6-class equatorial or a premium alt-azimuth is the realistic starting point for optics at this level.
