Over eight inches of aperture gathers about 900 times the light of your eye, with the resolving power for very tight double stars and fine planetary features. This is the classic Mewlon size for serious planetary and lunar observers.

Very long, so magnification comes easily and the natural targets are planets, the Moon, double stars and compact deep-sky objects. Even a 40 mm eyepiece gives only 60x, so wide fields require a different telescope.

Slow optics deliver contrast and forgiving eyepiece performance, at the cost of a narrow field and impractical deep-sky exposure times. A reducer is needed for any serious imaging.
