Fifty millimetres is small, and no processing changes how much light reaches the sensor. What makes it work is patience: the Seestar stacks many short exposures automatically, so an hour on the Orion Nebula produces a genuinely good image. Faint galaxies still demand multi-hour sessions that an 8 inch telescope would finish in minutes.
Focal length
260 mm
Short focal length is the point here, not a compromise. It frames large emission nebulae and open clusters the way they actually appear in astrophotography, rather than cropping into them. The cost is planets, which stay small discs at this focal length no matter the sensor.
Field of view
2.8 degrees telephoto
This is the headline change from the S50, which managed only 1.46 degrees. Andromeda spans about 3 degrees, so it now fits in a single frame instead of requiring a mosaic. If framing was what frustrated you about the original, this spec is the reason to move.
Sensor
1/1.2 inch, 8.3 MP
Four times the pixel count of the S50's 2 MP chip, on a physically larger sensor that collects more light per frame. In practice this means images hold up when cropped and printed rather than only on a phone screen. It is the difference between a novelty capture and one worth keeping.
Weight
2.8 kg
Light enough to carry out with one hand and set on a table, which is what makes it get used on marginal nights. It is 300 g heavier than the S50, a difference nobody notices in the field. Setup is placing it down and opening the app.
Optical design
4-element apochromatic, sealed
The extra element over the S50's triplet tightens star colour across the wider field, which matters more now that the frame is nearly twice as wide. The trade-off is permanence: the optics, camera, and mount are one sealed unit. Nothing can be cleaned, collimated, upgraded, or replaced.
