What These Numbers Mean

Three inches of fluorite glass. Small in absolute terms, but the optical quality means it shows lunar detail, planetary features and double stars far better than the aperture suggests. Faint galaxies are beyond it.

Focal length

570 mm

Short enough for genuinely wide low-power fields and long enough to reach 114x with a 5 mm eyepiece. It works as both a rich-field sweeper and a small planetary scope.

Focal ratio

A moderate ratio that keeps the fluorite doublet's correction essentially complete while leaving room for wide-field views. With the dedicated reducer it becomes a capable little astrograph.

Fluorite provides colour correction that ED glass approaches but does not equal, which is why this small tube is treated as a reference instrument. Two elements mean it reaches thermal equilibrium within minutes.
