Small Scope, Big Magnification
“Planetary reach that fits in a camera bag.”
If you asked us
If the planets are what pulled you in, and $1,800 for an 8-inch SCT is not happening, this is where we would put the money. It gives up deep-sky reach — f/13 is slow and the field is narrow — in exchange for being a genuinely portable telescope that does the one thing you actually wanted.

Why you'll love it
✓1365mm of focal length in a tube you can carry in one hand
✓114x and 195x — a real planetary ladder, not one fixed power
✓A mount stiffer than the scope needs, because at 195x that is what shows
Things to know
•Maksutovs need 30–45 minutes outside to cool before the view sharpens — put it out first, then have dinner
•f/13 makes this a poor deep-sky scope: the field is narrow and faint objects stay faint
•195x is close to the practical ceiling for 105mm of aperture, so it pays off on steady nights and not on turbulent ones
•Already own a solid photo tripod? The SVBony SV225 is the same idea as a head only. Do not go lighter than this, though — at 195x a featherweight mount shakes for seconds after every touch, and payload ratings do not tell you that
Who should skip this
–Wide-field views of large nebulae and clusters
–Astrophotography — an alt-az mount does not track
