Sooner or later, every observer who spends real time at the eyepiece hears about a particular one. It is heavy enough that people joke about using it for self-defense. It costs as much as an entire beginner telescope. And the people who own one talk about it the way others talk about a great watch or a first car. The 31mm Tele Vue Nagler has a reputation that seems wildly out of proportion to the fact that it is, in the end, a tube of glass you look through.
The obvious question is the honest one: how can a single eyepiece possibly be worth that? The answer is genuinely interesting, and it explains something important about how observing actually feels.
The eyepiece people call the hand grenade
The nickname comes from its size and weight. The 31mm Nagler is a serious lump of glass, so large it can unbalance smaller telescopes. That heft is not vanity. It is the physical cost of what the eyepiece is doing, which is delivering an enormous apparent field of view at a long focal length, with stars kept sharp all the way to the edge.
To understand why that combination is hard, and why it is prized, you have to understand the difference between the two fields of view an eyepiece has.
Apparent field: the window versus the wall
There are two ways to describe how much sky you see.
True field is how much actual sky the view covers, measured in degrees on the real sky. Apparent field is how wide the view appears to your eye, how much of your vision the illuminated circle fills. The eyepiece sets the apparent field. The telescope and magnification turn that into a true field.
Think of it as the difference between looking at the outdoors through a small bathroom window versus a large picture window. Both might frame the same tree, but one feels like peering through a porthole and the other feels like the wall is gone.
A simple Plossl eyepiece shows about 50 degrees of apparent field. It works, but you are aware of the black ring, the sense of looking down a tube. The Nagler shows around 82 degrees. That difference does not just show more sky, it changes the psychological experience of observing. The edges of the field push out past where your attention naturally falls, and the black tube seems to disappear.

The spacewalk feeling
Observers have a phrase for what a wide, sharp, low-power eyepiece does: the spacewalk effect. With the field so wide that its edges sit outside your central vision, and the stars pinpoint-sharp right to those edges, the sensation is not of looking at the sky through an instrument. It is of floating in it.
This is the thing that is hard to convey on a spec sheet and impossible to forget once you have felt it. Sweep a large low-power field across the Milky Way, or drop the whole sprawling Double Cluster into one view, and the experience is genuinely immersive in a way that a narrow field simply is not. People do not spend heavily on this eyepiece for numbers. They spend for that feeling.
Exit pupil: why it needs the right telescope
Here is the crucial, and often skipped, part of the story. The 31mm Nagler is not a good match for every telescope, and buying one for the wrong scope is how people end up disappointed.
A long focal length eyepiece produces a large exit pupil, the little cone of light that leaves the eyepiece and enters your eye. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio. On a fast telescope, say an f/5 Dobsonian, the 31mm gives roughly a 6mm exit pupil, which is close to the largest your dark-adapted eye can use. That is ideal: low power, maximum true field, a bright immersive sweep.
On a slow telescope, say an f/10, that same eyepiece produces a 3mm exit pupil and a fairly high magnification, which throws away the very wide-field, low-power advantage you paid for. The eyepiece is not doing anything wrong, it is simply the wrong tool for that scope.
This is why the 31mm Nagler is beloved by owners of fast, large Dobsonians and refractors, and less useful to owners of slow catadioptric scopes. The eyepiece and the telescope are a system. A large fast Dobsonian is where this eyepiece truly comes alive.
Where it shines, and where it does not
It shines on large, low-surface-brightness targets: open clusters, big emission nebulae, sweeping star fields, the broad glow of a galaxy against a dark sky. Anything where you want the most true field and an immersive frame is its home ground.
It does not shine on small, high-magnification targets. Planets, tight double stars, small planetary nebulae, these want short focal length eyepieces and high power, which is the opposite of what this eyepiece is for. Nobody splits Saturn's rings with a 31mm Nagler.
And it demands a telescope that can carry its weight and use its light, both physically and optically. On a small or slow scope, a lighter, cheaper wide-field eyepiece will make you just as happy. Something like a Panoptic 24mm delivers much of the wide-field magic with far less bulk and cost.
Why it became legendary
Al Nagler, the optical designer behind it, set out decades ago to build eyepieces with the immersive wide field of a fighter-jet gunsight, sharp to the edge, and he largely succeeded. The design was genuinely ahead of its time, and it created a whole category. For years, if you wanted that spacewalk view at low power with edge-to-edge sharpness, this was more or less the only game in town.
It endures for a simple reason. It does one thing, the immersive rich-field view, about as well as it can be done, and it does it reliably, decade after decade. Owners keep them for a lifetime and pass them down. In a hobby full of gear that gets bought and sold, an eyepiece people refuse to part with is telling you something real.
Is it worth it? Only if you own the telescope that unlocks it and you love the kind of observing it is built for. For the right observer, on the right scope, under a dark sky, the answer has been the same for a long time. They look once, and they understand.
