Astrophotography is one of the most technically demanding hobbies you can pick up, and also one of the most rewarding. This guide cuts through the noise and tells you exactly what to buy first.
The Minimal Viable Stack
You need three things: a camera, a lens (or telescope), and something that tracks the sky. Everything else, filters, calibration frames, dedicated astronomy cameras, comes later.
The Camera
Start with a DSLR or mirrorless camera you already own, or buy one used. For astrophotography, you want:
- Manual mode control
- ISO up to at least 3200 (ideally 6400)
- A standard hot shoe or tripod socket
Canon Rebel series (T3i through T8i) and Nikon D3200–D5600 are common choices available used for $100–250. Any of these will produce great results.
The Lens
A fast, wide prime lens delivers the best results per dollar. The 50mm f/1.8 lenses from Canon and Nikon are both excellent and cost around $100 new. For more reach, the Rokinon/Samyang 135mm f/2 is a cult favorite in the astrophotography community, exceptional sharpness and sky glow rejection for about $300.
The Tracker
This is the most important piece. Without a star tracker, you're limited to short exposures that produce grainy, detail-poor images. With a tracker, you can stack 2–5 minute exposures and collect dramatically more signal.
The Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini ($199) is the benchmark for portable trackers. The iOptron SkyGuider Pro ($299) is a step up with better load capacity.
Polar Alignment
Every tracking mount requires polar alignment, pointing the tracker's rotation axis at Polaris. This takes 5–10 minutes and becomes intuitive quickly. Most modern trackers include a polar scope or support phone app alignment.
Software Stack
- Capture: Backyard EOS (Canon) / Backyard Nikon, or camera's native intervalometer
- Stacking: DeepSkyStacker (free, Windows) or Siril (free, cross-platform)
- Processing: Adobe Lightroom for basic stretching, then Photoshop or PixInsight for advanced work
