What Is a Dobsonian?
A Dobsonian is a Newtonian reflector telescope (mirror-based) mounted on a simple, low-friction rocker box. The design was popularized by John Dobson in the 1960s as a way to make large-aperture telescopes cheap and accessible.
The defining characteristic: you get a lot of aperture for the money. An 8-inch Dobsonian costs about the same as a 4-inch refractor of equivalent quality.
