Divide the objective by the magnification and you get the width of the light beam leaving the eyepiece. At 5 mm it sits just inside a dark-adapted pupil, so none of the light gathered by those 50 mm objectives is wasted on your iris. It is also forgiving: small head movements do not black out the view the way they do with a tight 2 mm beam. Under a suburban sky a wider beam would only pour in more skyglow, so 5 mm is close to the sweet spot for most observers.

Ten times is about as much as most people can hold steady unsupported. Past that your pulse shows up in the image and fine detail dissolves, which is why 15x and 20x pairs arrive with a tripod recommendation attached. Braced against a doorframe or resting on a car roof, 10x stays sharp enough to break the Double Cluster into individual stars. It is also enough to lift the Andromeda galaxy clear of the background without shrinking the field so far that you lose track of where you are.

This is how much sky is actually inside the circle, and it is the number that decides what a night feels like. Seven and a half degrees holds the whole V of the Hyades with room around it, spans a third of Orion at once, and frames the Pleiades as a complete cluster against dark sky. For comparison, a typical telescope at low power shows about one degree. The wide field is also what makes a binocular easy to aim: you point roughly and the target is already there.

Eye relief is how far behind the eyepiece your pupil can sit and still see the entire field. Under about 15 mm, eyeglass wearers get a tunnel: the edges vanish because the lenses hold their eyes too far back. At 18 mm you can fold the eyecups down, leave your glasses on, and keep the full 7.5 degrees. If you are astigmatic that matters more than any other number on this page, because astigmatism is the one correction your eye cannot make up for by refocusing.

Fifty millimeters is roughly seven times the light-gathering area of a dark-adapted eye, which is what turns the Milky Way from a haze into a structure with rifts and knots in it. It is not enough to show a spiral arm or a planet as a disc, and no binocular in this class will. What it buys is the middle ground: enough aperture to reach real deep-sky objects, held in a body light enough that you will actually carry it outside.
