The CEM70 is iOptron's take on the German equatorial mount, and the 'CEM' (center-balanced equatorial mount) part is the clever bit worth understanding. On a normal GEM the telescope hangs out to one side and a heavy counterweight balances it on the other; on a center-balanced design the whole load sits more directly over the tripod, so the mount stays balanced with far less counterweight for the same payload. That's how a 13.6 kg head carries ~32 kg, enough for a large refractor or an 8–11" SCT that a portable harmonic mount can't hold steady. It also builds in iPolar: a small camera that images the area around the pole and tells you exactly how to align, replacing the squint-through-a-polar-scope step. It's still a GoTo, autoguided imaging mount like the rest, it just gives you big-scope capacity at a weight and price between the harmonic mounts and a full observatory GEM.
